We hope we find you in good spirits. If you are reading this then it means either you have decided to go solar or are planning on it. In both the cases we back your decision as this is the need of the hour and by doing so you will be contributing directly in conserving our “Planet”. If not then, we would like you to consider this as an option to leave this world a more beautiful place for generations to come.

Most of you might be unaware of the procedure which takes place when you go Solar and we at Oorjan are to your rescue. Our promise is simple – to provide a hassle-free solar adoption experience to our customer. So we take the pain of following the procedures written below.

The State of Karnataka has produced a good Solar Policy 2014 – 2021, in which it has set a target of 400 MW, to be achieved by 2018 under the solar rooftop on net-metering scheme policy.

Only a few states in India have adopted a feed-in tariff (FIT), such as Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, while other states such as Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka adopted a net-metering scheme. Karnataka is a unique state where applications have been invited from all consumers of residential, commercial and educational institutions, industries, etc. Compared to other states, BESCOM is the first distribution company to implement the solar rooftop scheme earnestly

The major bottleneck which any consumer faces while going Solar is the process of net metering and as promised we will be more than happy to guide you through the process of net metering. There are various steps involved to obtain permissions to install a Solar Rooftop Power Plant using Grid connection under BESCOM which usually takes 10-45 days for completion.

Process to obtain BESCOM permissions to install Solar Rooftop Power Plant

Initial documents needed to begin the procedure:

  1. Photograph of the person in whose name the electricity connection is registered. (Name of the person in Electricity Bill).
  2. Latest Electricity bill
  3. Canceled cheque (of the account to which any amount to be transferred from BESCOM will be transferred)

Step1- Online Registration

Log on to BESCOM website onto the online application page Fill in the needed data like account number, email, mobile number, etc. This page will allow you to do the initial payments and registration for the Solar Roof-top PV System. Photo and electricity bill can also be uploaded here as well.

Step-2- Offline Application

Once the online application is done, a copy of the online filled application along with necessary documents( Format 1,1A,3,4 duly filled- available at http://bescom.org/en/27458-2/) with registration fee shall be submitted to jurisdictional O&M, Sub-division office, BESCOM.

Step-3- Technical feasibility and Revenue report

After the application, BESCOM determines if the site is suitable (technical assessment) and the revenue impact by the customer.

The revenue report has to be signed by the Assistant Accounts Officer(AO) of the subdivision.

The technical feasibility report to be signed by the Junior Engineer/Assistant Engineer(JE/AE). JE/AE would come to the site and verify the details. The report is to be signed by Section Officer, O&M, BESCOM.

Step-4- Format 5


Signed Formats 3 and 4 are taken to the AEE (Assistant Executive Engineer) O&M, Sub-division office, BESCOM for signing the Format 5 which is the intimation for signing the PPA(Power Purchase Agreement). Once AEE signs the Format 5, prepare the PPA(Two copies on Rs.200 stamp paper) for net metering.

Step-5- Signing the PPA and Format 6A (http://bescom.org/en/27458-2/)

After getting the PPA as per above step, take it to the AEE O&M, Sub-division office, BESCOM for signing the same and also get the Format 6(for net metering) which is the approval for installing the system.

**Sometimes, the AEE gives Format 5, PPA and Format 6 signed together.

Sigh! We are halfway through Folks. Be prepared for some more steps just be with us we will cross this together…….

Step-6- Install the system and in parallel order the bi-directional meter from BESCOM certified vendors

Step-7- Submit the Work Completion Report

After the installation, fill the Format-6A (http://bescom.org/en/27458-2/) with the details of installation like panel, inverter, bi-directional meter, earthing etc. and submit to the AEE/ Executive Engineer(Elect.), O&M, Sub Division, BESCOM requesting him for installing the meter and commissioning the system. AEE will give Format 6B granting to go ahead with commissioning.

Step-8- Meter installation and System Commissioning

Format 7(approval letter) will be given duly signed by AEE/ Executive Engineer(Elect.), O&M, Sub Division, BESCOM. The AEE or any person authorized by the AEE will come to the site, check the installation parameters and install the bi-directional meter and commission the system. Format 8 will be prepared after getting signatures from AEE/EE (MT Division and O&M, Subdivision, BESCOM).

Step-9- Synchronisation report

After commissioning the system, the AEE O&M, Sub-division office, BESCOM should give the Format 8A signed which is the certificate for synchronization.

Step-10- Moving the entire file for bi-directional meter billing

The completed file should be moved to the Accounts department for initiating the billing from the bi-directional meter.

    1. All appliances can be run with off-grid solar. If you wish to run pumps and air conditioners on solar, then the system will need to be over sized a bit due to the higher power needs of the same.

      During the rain, we have observed about 40-50% production in our systems, which means the appliances will run but provide backup for half the time as summers OR you could run fewer appliances and run it longer.

      The best way to see how much the system produces in monsoons is to download the Oorjan monitoring App from the Playstore / iOS. You can “SUBSCRIBE” to a LIVE customer system near you and see the generation across all months.
